Tips & Advice
Frozen car Lock
Do not try to force a frozen car lock open - the key may break off. Check the lock on the passenger side. It may not have been affected by the frosty spell.
Heat the key with a match or lighter, then insert it into the lock. Repeat until the lock thaws.
Lost car keys
Lost car keys only become a real problem when you do not have a spare set, so make sure you keep your spare keys in a safe place. If you do not have a spare set of keys get a locksmith to copy you a set. This may seem like an obvious statement but you would be surprised at the number of people who only have one set of keys for their car.
Car key wont turn in ignition
Some cars are fitted with steering locks that click into place when the key is removed from the ignition. This is a security feature to stop thieves being able to steer a car that has been hot wired. If you ever find the key will not turn in the ignition it is most likely because the wheel has turned to just the right place to prevent the key from turning. Rather than forcing the key try gently turning the wheel from side to side whilst turning the key.
Remote control problems
The majority of new cars use a remote control operated central locking system to open the doors and disable the alarm. Most remote system utilise a radio transmitter at either 418Mhz or 433.92Mhz. This is very close to the frequency used by the MOD and can occasionally cause interference meaning the car can not be unlocked. The Radio Activated Key Entry Committee formed to address this problem and encourage car manufacturers to improve their remote locking systems.
